Meet Julia Schwadron Marianelli
Julia Schwadron Marianelli is a talented painter who creates based on glimpses of color or texture she observes outside (or drags inside). She uses mixtures of oil, water-based paints, bleach, and charcoal to layer these observed moments over text-based abstractions, embedding imagery or pattern onto and into paper and other manipulated fabric surfaces.
She lives in South Lake Tahoe, California with her family and has a few exhibitions coming up soon. We absolutely love her works that evoke a sense of joy, connection, calm, and beauty. Read on to hear from Julia and learn how you can find out more about her and her art!
"I use language as a text matrix for the first layer of a painting. It is meant as a placeholder for thought as well as a functional structure to organize the painting itself."
What would you like people to know when they first come across your artworks?
I’d like for people to know that the paintings are an exploration of the internal landscape of my mind and the external landscape that surrounds it.
When thinking about where you are in your journey, what are you most excited about and what keeps you inspired for the future?
I feel compelled to keep discovering more ways to find new imagery, explore new materiality and continue to share what I figure out.
If you could go to dinner with any artist, who would it be and why?
Honestly, though I admire and have learned from many well known artists, I prefer to have dinner with people I love. If I had the chance I would go to dinner with my dear friend and teacher/artist Matt Freedman, who passed away a few years ago and who I miss dearly.
What is the best piece of advice you've been given?
The best piece of advice I’ve been given was to make the work that I want to see.
What is one thing you wish you'd be asked in an interview?
I find interviews a bit of an out of body experience, so I’m really up for any questions as long as you don’t give me too long to think about it beforehand!
What music are you listening to these days?
I’ve been listening to The Mars Volta’s newest album over and over for the last few months.
